everything you need to know about cloth diapering

April 21, 2017 in mom life

Howdy there, friends and Happy Earth Day! Isn’t this planet that we get to call home so beautiful? I am pretty passionate about this place, God’s wonderful creation, and I am a big fan of taking care of it in the best way that I can. If you’ve been around here for awhile you know that I am a self-proclaimed “hippie mom.” One of the ways that I am hippie-ing (that could be a word, okay?) and doing my part to take care of our planet is by cloth diapering my little squishy one’s bum! So, in honour of Earth Day, I have teamed up with Glow Bug Cloth Diapers to bring you all kinds of cloth diapering info annnnnd a GIVEAWAY! Keep on reading for my answers to the most commonly asked cloth diapering questions, my honest review of Glow Bug Cloth Diapers, and to enter the giveaway, of course!

Disclaimer: I received free product in exchange for this review. As always, all opinions are 100% my own!

Okay, first things first, cloth diapering is legit and if you are considering it, that’s awesome. I applaud you. And if you’re not considering it, I’m not too sure why you’re reading this post (unless you’re my mom), but I want to just make sure you know that I think we all do what’s right for our family & if that includes using disposables then YOU DO YOU! There is no mom shaming going on here – just one mama sharing something she loves and hoping to maaaaybe inspire someone else to give cloth diapers a try. Now that that’s off my chest, I will save you all a lecture on the greatness of saving tons of waste from ending up in the landfill (waste that will actually outlive your child!) and leave you with this quote that I randomly stumbled upon at the farmer’s market yesterday…

“We did not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

Mic drop.

When people find out that we are cloth diapering their reactions usually vary between shock, admiration, and smugness (“oh, we’ll see how long that lasts…” *insert eye roll). And then they usually have some questions!

Here are the top 5 questions I have been asked about cloth diapering…

1. OH, my gosh… isn’t that so much work??

Not going to lie to you, folks… it’s not as easy as throwing a diaper in the garbage. But, it’s really not that hard. Here’s what it looks like for me: change diaper, deposit it into my wet bag, go do other mom things, repeat… annnd then every 2 days I take that wet bag, empty it into the washing machine, turn it on, do other mom things, run the second cycle, do more things, place everything in the dryer, put child to sleep, collect items from the dryer, watch Fixer Upper & stuff the inserts back into the pocket shell. Done. I also use this little cart from Ikea which I like because I just wheel it out into the living room when I am stuffing all the diaps!

2. What do you do when you go out?

Great question! It’s actually really easy! I pack a few cloth diapers in my diaper bag and a small wet bag (that came with my packages from Glow Bug). When I get home I put any dirty diapers and the little wet bag into the big wet bag until laundry day.

3. Do you pay a fortune on your energy bill for all the laundry?

I’m not sure why everyone asks this but the answer is no. I am the energy bill payer in our household and since we started cloth diapering I have not noticed any drastic changes in our water or energy costs. It is definitely cheaper than buying disposables every month!

4. Is it super gross??

Nope! The way I see it is that we all have to deal with our children’s bodily fluids and functions in one way or another… and this is just one of those ways!

5. What kind of diapers do you use?

Oh, I’m so glad that you asked! I use and LOVE Glow Bug Cloth Diapers. They are a pocket-style diaper (which means that you put the absorbent inserts into the outer PUL shell).

Here are 10 reasons why I highly recommend Glow Bug Cloth Diapers to anyone looking for a great cloth diapering option…

1. They are one-size!

Talk about a money saver?! Glow Bugs will fit from newborn to potty training because they are fully adjustable! Not only is the waist adjustable, but so is the rise of the diaper (meaning that you can make it shorter or longer). My little bug is fitting in his Glow Bugs perfectly!

2. They are designed with poop in mind!

Literally. These diapers have a 360 gusset (which is unlike any other diaper on the market) which is designed to prevent poopsplosions! Can I get an amen?! I find that the elastic at the back of the diaper also really helps to hold in any stray poops. Just for reference, before beginning to use cloth diapers I would say that at leeeeast 1 in 3 poops ended up in unwanted places… those disposables just can’t hold it in! Since using Glow Bugs, the poop catastrophes have become almost nonexistent! All the amens.

3. They are a pocket style diaper.

I am a fan of the pocket style diaper. With a pocket style it is easy to adjust the level of absorbency to fit your child’s needs because it simply means snapping in the appropriate amount of inserts.

4. The pocket opens from both ends.

Unlike other pocket-style diapers on the market, the pocket of a Glow Bug opens from both ends. They actually refer to it as a “sleeve-style diaper” and it is the only one of its kind on the market! I find this super duper handy for when I am stuffing the inserts into the diapers. I can put the insert in on one side and reach through the other side to pull it and flatten it.

5. They come with excellent insert options.

When you purchase Glow Bug Cloth Diapers you can either get microfiber inserts or upgrade to bamboo inserts. You will also receive their “Mr. Clock” inserts which are 2 layers of bamboo and 2 layers of microfiber. They are an hourglass shape that fit the whole diaper to provide excellent absorbency for overnight! I personally love the bamboo inserts for daytime (I use two because my little guy is quite a heavy wetter) and the Mr. Clocks for nighttime (again, I use two). The great thing about the insert options is that they are fully customizable to each child! It took some trial and error to come up with what works best for my babe!

6. They sell great bamboo cloth wipes.

Cloth diapers and cloth wipes really go hand-in-hand. It’s as easy as squirting on some water (I use my peri-bottle from the hospital!) and then tossing the dirty wipe in the same wet bag as the diaper. These bamboo wipes are also super soft on my little’s tooshie!

7. They are affordable.

The price is definitely right especially considering that they are one-size AKA the ONLY DIAPERS YOU’LL EVER NEED! (I’m not yelling, promise.)

8. They are a Canadian company!

I love that Glow Bug is a Canadian company! Shipping is free (which to us Canadians is like winning the lottery)!

9. They have EXCELLENT customer service.

This is actually why I ended up choosing Glow Bugs in the first place. My friend was telling me about how great the diapers are and although I was intrigued, what really sold me was when she began telling me about her fabulous experiences with their customer service. I love a company that backs up their product and that is exactly what this company does! I have sent them a couple of questions and they have promptly (like before naptime is even over!) responded to me and helped me to troubleshoot any diapering issues!

10. They are actually the cutest.

Last but certainly NOT least is the cuteness factor. Can we just talk about all of the cute prints? I just love them! The only problem with this is that I feel like I am singing that Pokemon song, “gotta catch ’em all!” and may be developing a little bit of a diaper addiction. Don’t tell the hubs. 😉

Guys, this cheese… I can’t even!
